Ovum pickup is a non-invasive procedure that is done under general or local intravenous anaesthesia. During the procedure, with the guidance of ultrasound, a thin, lengthy needle is inserted and passes through the vaginal fornix. Ultrasound enables visualisation of the ovaries and follicle-containing eggs. Each follicle is inserted with the tip of a needle to aspirate the follicular fluid that contains the oocytes. Ovum picks up usually take between 15 and 30 minutes.
